Photography
Portraits, reference images, lighting studies, and creative photo work built around mood, form, expression, and the art process.
Photography has become another part of how I build images.
For me, it is not just about taking a clean picture of somebody standing in front of a backdrop. It is about light, mood, shape, expression, and finding that moment where the person in front of the camera starts to feel like a real subject instead of just a pose.
My photography setup is simple, but intentional. I work with a Canon EOS Rebel T6, softbox lighting, black and white backdrops, and colored gels when the image calls for a little more atmosphere. The goal is to create portraits that can stand on their own, but also serve as strong reference material for painting, drawing, and digital work.
Some sessions may be clean and straightforward. Others may lean darker, more dramatic, or more cinematic. I like strong light, shadow, and faces that carry some weight behind them. That is usually where the image starts getting interesting.
Portrait Photography Workflow
I put together this workflow guide as a simple visual breakdown of how I approach a basic home portrait setup.
- Backdrop choice
- Lighting position
- Camera starting settings
- Posing notes
- Color gel ideas
- Reference shot list
Why this setup matters
This is not meant to be some fancy studio manual. It is a practical starting point. Set the backdrop. Place the subject. Shape the light. Check the focus. Take the shot. Adjust. Repeat.
How I use photography in my art
A good reference photo can make a huge difference.
When I am painting or drawing from imagination, I still need believable light, believable anatomy, and believable form. Photography gives me a way to build that myself instead of relying completely on random references online.
The camera becomes part of the art process. I can control the light. I can push the mood. I can shoot the expression I need. I can create the kind of image that fits the painting before the painting even starts.
That is especially useful for portraits, fantasy pieces, dramatic character studies, and anything that needs a stronger sense of realism.
Portrait Sessions
My portrait work is still developing, but the direction is clear. I am interested in portraits that feel personal, grounded, and visually strong.
- Individual portraits
- Artist portraits
- Creative reference photography
- Mood-based portrait studies
- Dramatic lighting sessions
- Portraits for future paintings or digital artwork
Reference Photography
Reference photography is a major part of how I want to build future artwork.
Instead of guessing at light and form, I can create custom references for paintings, commissions, character pieces, and Dreamscape-style work. This gives the final artwork a stronger foundation while still allowing room for imagination, exaggeration, and style.
The photograph is not the final destination. It is the starting point.
This page will continue to grow with portrait samples, behind-the-scenes setup shots, lighting tests, reference photography examples, and finished artwork that began with my own photos. The goal is to show the connection between the camera and the final piece.
